The surprise winner of the 2003 Man Booker Prize, DBC Pierre's debut novel, Vernon God Little, makes few apologies in its darkly comedic portrait of Martirio, Texas, a town reeling in the aftermath of a horrific school shooting. Fifteen-year-old Vernon Little narrates the first-person story with a cynical twang and a four-letter barb for each of his diet-obsessed townsfolk. His mother, endlessly awaiting the delivery of a new refrigerator, seems to exist only to twist an emotional knife in his back; her friend, Palmyra, structures her life around the next meal at the Bar-B-Chew Barn; officer Vaine Gurie has Vernon convicted of the crime before she's begun the investigation; reporter Eulalio Ledesma hovers between a comforting father-figure and a sadistic Bond villain; and Jesus, his best friend in the world, is dead-a victim of the killings. As his life explodes before him, Vernon flees his home in pursuit of a tropical fantasy: a cabin on a beach in Mexico he once saw in the movie Against All Odds. But the police-and TV crews-are in hot pursuit.

Vernon God Little is a daring novel and demands a patient reader, not because it is challenging to read- Pierre 's prose flows effortlessly, only occasionally slipping from the unmistakable voice of his hero-but because the book skates so precariously between the almost taboo subject of school violence and the literary gamesmanship of postmodern fiction. Yet, as the novel unfolds, Pierre 's parodic version of American culture never crosses the line into caricature, even when it climaxes in a death-row reality TV show. Pierre takes a freewheeling, irreverent look at teenage Sturm und Drang in his erratic, sometimes darkly comic debut novel about a Texas boy running from the law in the wake of a gory school shooting. Vernon Gregory Little is the 15-year-old protagonist, a nasty, sarcastic teenager accused of being an accessory to the murders committed by his friend Jesus Navarro in tiny Martirio, "the barbecue sauce capital of Texas." Vernon manages to make bail and avoid the media horde that descends on the town after the killings, but he's unable to get to the other gun-his father's-which he knows will tie him to the crime, despite his innocence. His flight path takes him first to Houston, where he unsuccessfully tries to hook up with gorgeous former schoolmate Taylor Figueroa; the crafty beauty, promised a media job by the evil Lally, who's also duped Vernon 's mom, follows him to Mexico and efficiently betrays him. Most of the plotting feels like an excuse for Vernon 's endless, sharply snide riffs on his small town and the unique excesses of America that helped spawn the killings. Unfortunately, Vernon 's voice grows tiresome, his excesses make him rather unlikable and the over-the-top, gross-out humor is hit-or-miss. Pierre 's wild energy offers entertaining satire as well as cringe-provoking scenes, and though he can write with incisive wit, this is a bumpy ride.

Decía Jorge Luis Borges que el significado de una novela como El Quijote no podía ser el mismo en el siglo XVII que en el XX. Pues bien, éste es el reto que ha afrontado el laureado escritor francés Michel Tournier al retomar la historia de Robinsón Crusoe y reescribirla desde una sensibilidad contemporánea.

Toda la fe, la inocencia, el positivismo y el arrogante etnocentrismo del héroe de Daniel Defoe, se convierten en la obra de Michel Tournier en duda sistemática, en conciencia de las invisibles relaciones entre Robinsón y la naturaleza que le limita y le otorga su identidad, y de los complejos, sutiles, conflictivos lazos que le unen a su alter ego, Viernes, un personaje que ha dejado de ser el sumiso esclavo del héroe, para convertirse en el imposible interlocutor de un poeta.

Viernes o Los limbos del Pacífico constituye un texto sugerente, en el que las peripecias de su solitario protagonista dan pie a la reflexión conjunta de autor y lector sobre el sentido de la condición humana y de la civilización. La novela se cierra con un final consecuente y paradigmático: Viernes viajará en el velero que le conducirá a la sociedad occidental, Robinsón, que descubre justo entonces la atrocidad que se esconde en los valores jerárquicos de la cultura a la que pertenece, rehusa subir a bordo y asume su condición de náufrago, en la inesperada compañía de un grumete que huye, como antes el salvaje Viernes, de la cruel compañía de sus compañeros de raza y de cultura.

В очередном томе сочинений Томаса Пинчона (р. 1937) представлен впервые переведенный на русский его первый роман "V."(1963), ставший заметным явлением американской литературы XX века и удостоенный Фолкнеровской премии за лучший дебют. Эта книга написана писателем, мастерски владеющим различными стилями и увлекательно выстраивающим сюжет. Интрига"V." строится вокруг поисков загадочной женщины, имя которой начинается на букву V. Из Америки конца 1950-х годов ее следы ведут в предшествующие десятилетия и в различные страны, а ее поиски становятся исследованием смысла истории. Как и другим книгам Пинчона, роману "V." присуща атмосфера таинственности и мистификации, которая блестяще сочетается с юмором и философской глубиной.

Некая таинственная V. возникает на страницах дневника, который пишет герой романа. Попытки ее найти вязнут в сложных переплетениях прошлого, в паутине нитей, намеков, двусмысленностей и многозначности. Во всех частях света, в разных эпохах обнаруживаются следы, но сама V. неуловима.

Существует ли она на самом деле, или является грандиозной мистификацией, захватившей даже тех, кто никогда не слышал о V.? V. – очень простая буква или очень сложный символ. Всего две линии. На одной – авантюрно-приключенческий сюжет, горькая сатира на американские нравы середины 50-х, экзотика Мальты, африканская жара и холод Антарктики; на другой – поиски трансцендентного смысла в мироздании, энтропия вселенной, попытки героев познать себя, социальная паранойя. Обе линии ведут вниз, и недаром в названии после буквы V стоит точка. Этот первый роман Томаса Пинчона сразу поставил автора в ряды крупнейших прозаиков Америки и принес ему Фолкнеровскую премию.

Una mujer que resuelve un día liberarse de las cadenas que la atan, es la base del profundo estudio psicológico que hizo Stefan Zweig en 24 horas en la vida de una mujer.

El autor se interna en el tortuoso laberinto de las pasiones humanas frente a un mundo social que tiende a privilegiar las apariencias y que se muestra sumamente cruel con aquellos que osan trastornar el equilibrio moral de la sociedad.

Curiosamente, el mismo autor da muestra inequívoca del efecto que los prejuicios sociales tienen sobre todos, ya que en el momento culminante de esta novela, cuando pudo haberse dirigido el tema hacia un final poco ortodoxo, el autor regresa sobre sus pasos y vierte una profunda carga moralina en la que la súbita aparición de lo bueno y lo malo se conforman en insoportables cadenas que cortan la respiración tanto de los personajes como del mismo lector.

Finalmente la novela conlleva su propia moraleja terriblemente conservadora.

La lectura de 24 horas en la vida de una mujer es recomendable puesto que en ella el lector podrá apreciar el efecto que el mundo de las apariencias tiene sobre todos por igual.

20 ans après leurs aventures d’Artagnan et les trois mousquetaires sont à nouveau entrainés dans l’aventure. Les temps ont changé: le Cardinal s’appelle Mazarin et n’est guère aimé, Porthos est installé et cherche un titre de baron, Aramis est devenu abbé mais aime toujours à ferrailler et Athos s’occupe de son "filleul", le Vicomte de Bragelonne.Seul d’Artagnan est resté lieutenant des Mousquetaires du Roi... Leurs aventures se déroulent au milieu de la Fronde, période qui voit vaciller le pouvoir royal sous la régence d’Anne d’Autriche et de Mazarin. Les mousquetaires iront même jusqu’en Angeleterre pour essayer de sauver Charles Ier.... Si les personnages ont toujours les qualités de coeur et d’esprit qui ont fait le succès des Trois Mousquetaires, ils ont acquis une plus grande épaisseur et leurs doutes sont là pour en témoigner... On retrouve donc nos héros mais avec une dimension supplémentaire, chaque mousquetaire étant un symbole ou une tendance et ma fois comme cela ne nuit pas à la qualité des batailles... pourquoi se priver?

Slowenien? Wo das liegt? Verärgert über die Borniertheit eines ausländischen Zeitungsartikels beginnt die junge Slowenin Veronika, einen geharnischten Antwortbrief an den Verfasser zu entwerfen. Fast hat sie über ihrem Zorn vergessen, dass sie gerade eine Überdosis Schlaftabletten eingenommen hat und eigentlich auf den nahen Tod wartete, als ihr neben dem Bett dieser Artikel ins Auge fiel. So viel Zeit muss sein. Die Wirkung hat noch nicht eingesetzt und Veronika begann sich ohnehin fast ein wenig zu langweilen, also schreibt sie. Dann schläft sie ein. Als sie wieder erwacht, befindet sie sich in Villete, dem berüchtigten Irrenhaus von Ljubljana. Nicht ohne Humor, dieser Einstieg, und ein sehr gelungenes Porträt der an Ereignislosigkeit und Lebensüberdruss leidenden jungen Frau -sofort ist man ihr ganz nahe.

Coelho brannte dieses Thema schon lange unter den Nägeln, wurde er in den 60er Jahren von seinen Eltern doch selbst dreimal in die Psychiatrie eingewiesen, die Gründe hierfür sind ihm bis heute unklar. Was ihm hingegen klar wurde war, wie dort Begriffe wie Normalität und Verrücktheit auf den Kopf gestellt wurden. Sehr bald merkt Veronika, dass in diesem Kuckucksnest voll überschäumender, fantasievoller Figuren die verschlossen-mürrischen Wärterinnen die eigentlichen Verrückten sind, stumpf und ohne jeglichen Lebensfunken ihre Arbeit verrichtend. Dr. Igor, der Anstaltsleiter, ständig am Erproben fragwürdiger Therapiemethoden und für den Anstaltsalltag kaum zu erwärmen, steigert das Ganze endgültig ins Absurde. Eine Figur, die für einen skurrilen Stimmungsmix aus Zauberberg und Kottan ermittelt sorgt.

Als man Veronika schließlich mitteilt, dass sie eines schweren Herzfehlers wegen nur noch wenige Tage zu leben hat, gewinnt sie wider Erwarten ihren Lebenswillen zurück, überwindet in kurzer Zeit ihr unausgelebtes Dasein und erlebt zudem eine unerwartete Liebe. In diesen Passagen schlägt Coelho Funken, sie machen dieses zarte Buch zu einem absoluten Hochgenuss.

Hace unos días terminé de leer una de las grandes novelas del siglo XIX. Pero hay libros de los que no se puede decir “terminé de leerlo”, y probablemente ésa sea la prueba de su grandeza: aunque la haya terminado sigo, de diferentes modos, queriendo, sin querer, leyendo esa novela.

Vasili Grossman fue, durante un tiempo, algo así como un héroe de la Unión Soviética. Había nacido en 1905 y en Berdichev, Ucrania, en una familia judía acomodada; la revolución lo entusiasmó desde el principio y decidió estudiar ingeniería porque, en esos días, el camarada Lenin decía que el comunismo era el poder soviético más la electricidad. Pero empezó a escribir desde muy joven y, a sus 30, publicó sus primeros cuentos; en 1936, mientras el camarada Stalin mataba a millones de comunistas con sus purgas, Grossman fue aceptado en la oficialísima Unión de Escritores, con todos sus privilegios, y abandonó la ingeniería. Al año siguiente su esposa Olga fue detenida por “no haber denunciado las actividades antisoviéticas” de su primer marido, el poeta Boris Guber. Desesperado, Grossman mandó una carta al jefe del servicio secreto, pidiendo su liberación: “Todo lo que poseo -mi educación, mi éxito como escritor, el alto privilegio de compartir mis pensamientos y mis sentimientos con los lectores soviéticos- se lo debo al gobierno soviético”. Para su propia sorpresa, su mujer fue liberada unos meses más tarde.

En 1941, la alianza entre Stalin y Hitler se rompió y los alemanes invadieron Rusia. Grossman fue exceptuado del servicio militar, pero pidió ir al frente como corresponsal: sus crónicas de guerra, publicadas en el diario del ejército soviético, Estrella Roja, lo hicieron popular y respetado. Grossman acompañó a las tropas rusas que liberaron el campo de Treblinka y fue uno de los primeros en escribir sobre el holocausto nazi. Buscaba, entre otras cosas, rastros de su madre, deportada y gaseada; sus artículos sirvieron como pruebas en los juicios de Nüremberg. Cuando la guerra terminó su vida era, dentro de lo posible, desahogada; hay distintas versiones sobre por qué decidió tirar todo por la borda.

Quizás haya sido la decantación de lo que había visto y vivido en la Gran Guerra o, más probablemente, la ola de antisemitismo lanzada entonces por el Kremlin. Lo cierto es que, en algún momento, Grossman empezó a escribir una novela que contaría esos años y que pensó llamar, sin el menor pudor, Vida y Destino.

Cuando la terminó, en 1960, Grosmann la mandó, como debía, al comité de censura. No tenía grandes expectativas pero era el único modo de llegar, eventualmente, a publicarla. La censura no sólo la vetó; poco después su departamento fue asaltado por un comando KGB que se llevó todas las copias e incluso, por si acaso, los carbónicos y las cintas de la máquina de escribir. Un jefe del Politburó, Mikhail Suslov, le dijo que su novela no se publicaría en trescientos años: “¿Por qué tendríamos que agregar su libro a las bombas atómicas que nuestros enemigos preparan contra nosotros? ¿Por qué tendríamos que iniciar una discusión sobre la necesidad de la Unión Soviética?”. En esos días todavía había gente que creía en la literatura.

Vasili Grossman se murió en 1964, a sus 58, marginado, humillado, de un cáncer de estómago. Quince años más tarde un amigo consiguió sacar a Suiza un borrador de la novela, y al tiempo se publicó en inglés y francés; la traducción española apareció el año pasado. Vida y destino es, insisto, una de las grandes novelas del siglo XIX.

Digo: una novela de cuando las novelas creían que podían -que debían- contar el mundo sin pudor, sin ninguna modestia. Algunos la comparan con Guerra y Paz: yo estoy de acuerdo. Vida y destino es un fresco espeluznante de los desastres de la guerra y de la vida bajo el poder de un Estado total: los días en el frente de Stalingrado donde cada cual sigue su pequeño camino personal bajo las bombas, las agachadas de los funcionarios que obedecen por miedo o por codicia, la carta estremecedora de una vieja judía a punto de viajar al exterminio, las noches en un gulag soviético y en un campo alemán, las muertes heroicas, las muertes tontas, las muertes olvidadas, las traiciones, las peleas de un científico ruso con sus colegas y con su conciencia, las matanzas de campesinos durante la colectivización de la agricultura, los amores y desamores donde también tercia la mano del Estado, las semejanzas entre el sistema nazi y el soviético, las reflexiones sobre la sucesión de Lenin por Stalin, la caída de un comunista detenido y torturado sin saber por qué, los grandes odios, las pequeñas miserias, contadas con un aliento extraordinario, sin miedo de la desmesura.

Y con un objetivo: se ve -se lee todo el tiempo- que Grossman escribió esta novela como quien prepara meticulosamente la bomba suicida, con la conciencia de que le costaría la vida o algo así pero que, de algún modo, le valdría la pena.

Una novela, digo, del siglo XIX: de cuando las novelas creían que debían y podían. Después, a principios del veinte, la vanguardia se cargó aquella forma ingenua, desmesurada de poner en escena “lo real” para cambiarlo, y buscó en la experimentación sobre sí misma su sentido. Hasta que, en los setentas, ochentas, esa idea chocó contra sus límites y no quedó ni lo uno ni lo otro: ni contar para cambiar el mundo ni para buscar nuevas maneras.

Me da envidia el camarada Grossman, que sabía para qué escribía. Ahora no sabemos: me parece que casi siempre no sabemos. Ya no sabemos dónde está el coraje de un texto, dónde su necesidad. En general, creo, escribimos para escribir. Porque es interesante, simpático, satisfactorio incluso, porque no está mal ser escritor, porque se gana algo de plata y un poco de respeto, un par de viajes, la admiración de algunos. Por eso, supongo, escribimos cositas. Por eso, supongo, las librerías están llenas de libros que no dicen nada, que se olvidan en un par de meses, que dan exactamente igual. Me da envidia, mucha envidia Vasili Grossman, canceroso, olvidado, convencido quizá de que su esfuerzo había valido todas esas penas: que si tenía una vida debía hacerla un destino y que ese destino, extrañamente, era una novela.
