Inhalt: Die Handlung ist ungefähr zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts im Gebiet der großen Seen, an der kanadisch-amerikanischen Grenze, angesiedelt. Der junge Deutsche Edgar Bender ist auf der Suche nach seiner verschollenen Schwester, die bei einem Überfall der Ottawas entführt worden war, in die Vereinigten Staaten gekommen. Bei seinem gefährlichen Unternehmen, in dessen Verlauf er sich gegen Banditen und feindliche Indianer bewähren muss, steht ihm ein von seinem Stamm ausgestoßener Indianer bei.   

Veröffentlichungsgeschichte: Dieser Fortsetzugsroman ist die erste lange Erzählung von Franz Treller für die Zeitschrift "Der Gute Kamerad", nachdem im vorangegangenen Jahrgang mit Wolnoth bereits eine ältere Kurzgeschichte von ihm erschienen war, allerdings ohne Nennung des Autors. Gleichzeitig ist es die umfangreichste seiner Jugenderzählungen, die sich über alle Hefte des 7. Jahrgangs erstreckt.

In Buchform erscheint dieser Roman als 'Erzählung für die reifere Jugend' erstmals 1896 in der Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft in einer Ausstattung, die den Jugenderzählungen von Karl May vergleichbar ist ('Rote Reihe'). Dabei handelt es sich um einen aufwändig gestalteten Prachtband mit einem geprägten Einband aus rotem Ganzleinen und einem aufgedruckten Deckelbild, ausgestattet mit sechzehn Farbtafeln. Ab der dritten Auflage erhält das Buch einen einfacheren dunkelblauen Leineneinband mit einem neuen vierfarbigen Motiv. In den 30er Jahren wechselt die Aufmachung zu einer braunen Leinwand und Titelaufdruck (vermutlich mit Schutzumschlag), die originalen Farbtafeln werden auf die Hälfte reduziert.

1950 wiederbelebt der Union Verlag die traditionsreiche 'Kamerad-Bibliothek' und veröffentlicht in dieser Reihe auch wieder mehrere Erzählungen von Franz Treller, allerdings in "vollständigen Neubearbeitungen" durch den Jugendschriftsteller Fritz Helke. Verwehte Spuren wird nun als Band 3 der neuen Reihe geführt. Die Ausstattung des Buches variiert bei den folgenden Auflagen, mitunter auch innerhalb einer Auflage - man wechselt von Halbleinwand mit Schutzumschlag zu einem billigeren Pappband, es gibt im Laufe der Zeit drei verschiedene Titelbildmotive, die vier Farbtafeln im Inneren werden bald gestrichen, vor allem aber wird die Seitenanzahl ab 1956 um rund 100 Seiten reduziert.

Die letzte Auflage erfolgt 1971, insgesamt erreicht der Roman seit seiner Erstveröffentlichung 1896 eine Auflage von 114 000 Stück.

En 1866, une chose mystérieuse hante les océans. De la taille d'une baleine mais bien plus rapide, cette chose apparaît et disparaît comme par enchantement. Le professeur français Pierre Aronnax, professeur au Muséum de Paris, auteur entre autres des «Mystères des grands fonds sous-marins», et Conseil, son fidèle domestique, partent au bord de l'Abraham Lincoln, une frégate américaine, dans le but d'éclaircir le mystère de ce monstre. La chasse à travers les océans commence, mais sans succés. Arrivé aux environs des mers de Chine, l'équipage commence à désespérer et dès lors pense avoir à faire à une légende. Alors qu'ils s'apprêtent à rebrousser chemin pour retourner vers l'Europe, le monstre tant recherché apparaît soudainement et entre en combat avec la frégate américaine. S'engage une lutte sans merci suite à laquelle Aronnax, Conseil son domestique et le harponneur canadien Ned Land se retrouvent projetés hors du navire et prennent pied sur la bête. A leur effroi, ce monstre est fait de tôle et d'acier, et est en fait un sous-marin d'un genre tout à fait nouveau. Ils seront recueillis au bord de ce sous-marin, dénommé le Nautilus, en tant que prisonniers et devront suivre leur hôte, le capitaine Nemo, dans son tour du monde souterrain, un périple qui leur fera découvrir mille et uns trésors, dont l'Atlantide et bien d'autres merveilles. Mais ils devront également affronter de nombreux et mystérieux monstres marins.

Jules Verne nous propose ici un merveilleux voyage à travers les fonds sous-marins, un monde qui à l'époque était totalement inconnu de l'homme, malgré qu'il occupe plus de 70% de notre planète. Publié en 1869, Vingt mille lieues sous les mers constitue le roman de référence de l’œuvre de Jules Verne, et en particulier des Voyages Extraordinaires. Jules Verne nous décrit une aventure passionante pleine de rebondissements mais aussi d'émerveillements et très riche d'enseignements. On apprend à connaître à connaître le mystérieux et mythique capitaine Nemo et de son sous-marin le Nautilus, noms qui font toujours référence aujourd'hui. Mais Vingt mille lieues sous les mers est aussi une fable écologique, portant une réflexion sur les relations qu'entretient l'homme moderne avec son milieu. Ici l'homme moderne est plongé dans un univers qui lui totalement inconnu et il devra y survivre.

Le capitaine Nemo est un personnage savant, mais sombre et secret qui dit avoir renoncé à la société des hommes, et coupé tout lien avec la terre. On le voit toutefois aider les autonomistes grecs en leur livrant les trésors engloutis qu'il retrouve. Il montre également une haine implacable pour les navires portant un certain pavillon, qu'il coule systématiquement pour venger sa famille. Le Nautilus, son sous-marin se base sur une technologie encore peu connue à l'époque, l'électricité. Jules Verne développe peu l'équipage du Nautilus, ce qui ajoute encore plus de mystère à cet énigmatique vaisseau. On voit notamment le Nautilus passer sous le canal de Suez avant sa percée officielle, ainsi que passer sous l'Antarctique (dont on ignorait à l'époque qu'il s'agissait d'un continent et non de glace flottante comme l'Arctique).

Il est à noter que le capitaine Nemo à bord du Nautilus refera une dernière apparition dans l'oeuvre de Jules Verne dans le roman L'île mystérieuse (1874) où l'on assiste à sa fin.

Vingt mille lieues sous les mers a été souvent porté au cinéma, que ce soit en tant que film ou dessin animé. L'adaptation la plus célèbre est certainement le film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea réalisée par Richard Fleischer pour les studios Disney avec comme acteurs James Mason, Paul Lukas, Peter Lorre et Kirk Douglas.
